Inheritance of resistance to organophosphorus insecticides in Culex tarsalis Coquillet
Abstract:
The mode of inheritance of resistance to parathion, fenitrothion, fenthion, chlorpyr fosmethyl, and parathion-methyl was studied in a strain of C. tarsalis. Resistance in the F(1) hybrid was partially dominant. Backcross experiments indicated that resistance is derived from more than one gene. This conclusion was confirmed by repeated backcrosses of the F(1) to the susceptible strain and selection of the backcross progeny with a discriminating dosage of parathion-methyl.
Insights
Resistance to multiple organophosphate insecticides in C. tarsalis is partially dominant and controlled by more than one gene. This finding is crucial for managing insecticide resistance in this pest species.
Area of Science:
- Entomology
- Genetics
- Pesticide Resistance
Background:
- Insecticide resistance poses a significant challenge in pest management.
- Understanding the genetic basis of resistance is key to developing effective control strategies.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the mode of inheritance of resistance to several organophosphate insecticides in C. tarsalis.
- To determine the genetic mechanisms underlying insecticide resistance in this mosquito species.
Main Methods:
- Studied inheritance of resistance to parathion, fenitrothion, fenthion, chlorpyrifos-methyl, and parathion-methyl in C. tarsalis.
- Conducted F(1) hybrid and backcross experiments.
- Utilized discriminating dosage selection with parathion-methyl.
Main Results:
- Resistance to the tested organophosphates was partially dominant in F(1) hybrids.
- Backcross experiments indicated that resistance is controlled by multiple genes.
- Repeated backcrosses and selection confirmed the polygenic nature of resistance.
Conclusions:
- The inheritance of resistance to multiple organophosphate insecticides in C. tarsalis is complex and polygenic.
- This genetic complexity has implications for resistance management strategies.
- Further research into specific resistance genes is warranted.
