Summary

Both microbial (Natuphos) and plant (Phytaseed) phytase effectively improved broiler performance and nutrient utilization in corn-soybean diets. Phytaseed phytase demonstrated comparable efficacy and safety to Natuphos phytase, with optimal results observed at 2,500 U/kg.

Area of Science:

  • Animal Nutrition
  • Biotechnology
  • Feed Additives

Background:

  • Phytate phosphorus (P) is a major P source in plant-based broiler diets but has low bioavailability.
  • Phytase enzymes are used to improve phytate P utilization and reduce inorganic P supplementation.
  • Evaluating novel phytase sources like Phytaseed is crucial for optimizing broiler nutrition.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficacy of microbial (Natuphos) and plant-derived (Phytaseed) phytase in enhancing phytate P utilization in broilers.
  • To assess the safety of Phytaseed phytase in young broiler diets.
  • To determine the dose-response relationship for phytase supplementation.

Main Methods:

  • Corn-soybean meal basal diets with varying levels (250, 500, 2,500 U/kg) of Natuphos and Phytaseed phytase were fed to broilers.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Growth performance (body weight gain, feed intake, gain:feed) was monitored weekly.
  • Excreta and toe ash were analyzed for nutrient retention and bone mineralization.
  • Gross necropsy and histological examination were performed on selected birds.
  • Main Results:

    • Both phytase sources significantly improved body weight gain, feed intake, gain:feed ratio, and nutrient retention (DM, P, Ca).
    • Toe ash content and percentage were enhanced by phytase supplementation.
    • Phosphorus excretion decreased with increasing phytase levels, reaching a plateau around 2,500 U/kg.
    • No adverse effects or abnormalities were observed in gross necropsy or histological evaluations for either phytase source or level.

    Conclusions:

    • Phytaseed phytase is as effective as Natuphos phytase in improving the performance and nutrient utilization of young broilers fed corn-soybean meal-based diets.
    • Phytaseed phytase is safe for use in broiler diets at the tested levels.
    • The optimal dose for both phytases appears to be around 2,500 U/kg for maximizing benefits.
