Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular Surgery
  • Thoracic Surgery
  • Vascular Surgery

Background:

  • Aortic aneurysm complicating pseudocoarctation is a rare clinical entity.
  • Pseudocoarctation results from congenital aortic elongation and kinking.

Observation:

  • A 72-year-old woman presented with recurrent bronchitis, revealing a calcified aortic aneurysm.
  • Imaging demonstrated a saccular aneurysm on the aortic arch with kinking and stenosis.
  • Surgical intervention involved excision of the 7 cm aneurysm and prosthetic graft replacement.

Findings:

  • The patient underwent successful surgical repair of the descending thoracic aorta aneurysm.
  • Postoperative recovery was marked by hemodynamic stability and no neurological deficits.
  • The patient experienced a good recovery with an 8-month follow-up.

Implications:

  • Prosthetic replacement is a valid treatment for aortic aneurysms secondary to pseudocoarctation.
  • This intervention mitigates risks of hypertension, aortic insufficiency, dissection, and compression.
  • Early surgical management is crucial for preventing severe complications.
