Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Recurrent abdominal pain is often attributed to chronic appendicitis, though this remains debated.
  • This study aimed to investigate the existence of chronic inflammation of the appendix through clinical and histopathological analysis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To clarify the existence of chronic appendicitis as a distinct clinical entity.
  • To correlate clinical and histopathological findings in patients undergoing appendectomy.

Main Methods:

  • Clinical data and serum findings from 269 appendectomy patients were analyzed.
  • Appendices were histologically examined for chronic inflammation markers.
  • Patients were followed up 14-46 months post-appendectomy.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Chronic appendicitis was diagnosed in 14.2% of cases.
  • Recurrent abdominal pain and normal leukocyte count were significantly associated with chronic appendicitis.
  • 81.8% of patients with chronic appendicitis experienced symptom relief after appendectomy.

Conclusions:

  • The findings support the existence of a clinico-pathological condition termed chronic appendicitis.
  • Appendectomy appears to be an effective treatment for chronic appendicitis.
