Background:

  • Midkine (MK) is a heparin-binding growth factor identified during early retinoic acid-induced differentiation of embryonal carcinoma cells.
  • Its role in tumorigenesis is an area of active research.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the overexpression of midkine (MK) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
  • To correlate MK expression levels with HCC differentiation status.

Main Methods:

  • Immunohistochemical analysis of MK protein expression in 77 primary HCC specimens using a specific monoclonal antibody.
  • In situ hybridization to detect MK transcripts in 20 HCC samples.
