    Summary

    Transhepatic sclerotherapy of coronary varices offers temporary control of variceal hemorrhage. Bleeding from short gastric varices can recur soon after the procedure.

    Area of Science:

    Background:

    • Variceal hemorrhage is a serious complication of portal hypertension.
    • Coronary varices are a potential source of significant bleeding.

    Observation:

    • Transhepatic variceal sclerotherapy was performed targeting a coronary varix.

    Findings:

    • The procedure provided transient hemostasis.
    • Hemorrhage recurred from short gastric varices within hours.

    Implications:

    • Transhepatic sclerotherapy may not be a definitive treatment for all types of variceal bleeding.
    • Alternative or adjunctive therapies may be necessary for short gastric varices.
