Area of Science:

  • Neuropathology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Oncocytic meningiomas are rare histological variants of meningiomas.
  • Only six cases have been previously described in the literature.
  • This subtype exhibits aggressive behavior and frequent recurrences.

Observation:

  • A case of oncocytic meningioma in a 78-year-old female patient with a history of breast cancer is presented.
  • The right frontal tumor measured 3 cm.
  • Histological examination revealed large polygonal neoplastic cells with eosinophilic cytoplasm, arranged in sheets and nests, with psammomatous bodies present.

Findings:

  • Immunohistochemistry confirmed oncocytic differentiation, showing strong positivity for antimitochondrial antiserum, vimentin, and epithelial membrane antigen (EMA), with focal cytokeratin reactivity.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The tumor displayed rare mitoses and absent necrosis.
  • The patient remained well eleven months post-surgery.
  • Implications:

    • This case emphasizes the rarity of oncocytic meningiomas.
    • Discussion of the immunophenotypic profile and differential diagnosis supports its recognition as a distinct tumor entity.
    • Understanding this rare variant is crucial for appropriate clinical management and prognosis.
