Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Endocrinology

Background:

  • Graves disease is an autoimmune disorder affecting the thyroid.
  • Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of open-angle glaucoma, including normal-tension glaucoma, in patients with Graves disease.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study involving 104 Japanese patients with Graves disease.
  • Ophthalmic examinations included applanation tonometry, exophthalmometry, visual field perimetry, and orbital CT scans.

Main Results:

  • 13% of patients showed glaucomatous visual field defects without optic neuropathy.
  • 22% of patients were diagnosed with ocular hypertension (intraocular pressure > 21 mm Hg).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Seven patients were diagnosed with normal-tension glaucoma.
  • Conclusions:

    • The prevalence of open-angle glaucoma, normal-tension glaucoma, and ocular hypertension is significantly elevated in Graves disease patients compared to the general population.
