Thyroid artery embolization can rarely cause branch retinal artery occlusion. This case highlights a potential risk following the procedure for hyperthyroidism.

  • A 33-year-old man experienced visual loss and scotoma after thyroid artery embolization.
  • Ophthalmologic examination revealed reduced visual acuity and visual field defects.

  • Fluorescein angiography showed delayed filling and nonfilling of branch retinal arteries in the affected eye.
  • This pattern is indicative of branch retinal artery occlusion.

Implications:

  • Physicians should consider the risk of branch retinal artery occlusion after thyroid artery embolization.
