Area of Science:

  • Nutrition Science
  • Neurology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Good nutrition is vital for persons with multiple sclerosis (MS) to improve quality of life and mitigate secondary health conditions.
  • Dietary patterns significantly impact overall health and disease management in chronic neurological disorders.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize the nutritional intake patterns of women diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
  • To identify factors, including age, that influence the dietary intake of women with MS.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized 3-day food diaries to collect detailed dietary intake data from participants.
  • Employed statistical analysis to correlate age with specific nutrient consumption levels.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Participants exhibited inadequate intake of carbohydrates, dietary fiber, vitamin E, calcium, and zinc.
  • Conversely, intake of saturated fat, protein, vitamin A, vitamin C, folate, and iron exceeded recommended levels.
  • Older women reported lower consumption of calories, total fat, and saturated fat compared to younger participants.

Conclusions:

  • Nutritional intake among women with MS is suboptimal in several key areas, despite established dietary recommendations.
  • Findings highlight a critical need for targeted nutritional interventions to support the health and well-being of individuals with MS.
