    Summary

Transcatheter arterial embolization effectively stops gastrointestinal bleeding and is valuable for other bleeding sites when medication fails. This minimally invasive procedure offers significant benefits for hemorrhage control.

    Area of Science:

    • Interventional Radiology
    • Vascular Surgery

    Background:

    • Hemorrhage management often requires advanced interventions.
    • Pharmacological therapies have limitations in controlling certain types of bleeding.

    Observation:

    • Transcatheter therapeutic arterial embolization was performed on 19 patients (11 with gastrointestinal hemorrhage, 8 with bleeding from other sites).
    • Active contrast extravasation was the primary indication for embolization.

    Findings:

    • Successful hemorrhage control was achieved in all 11 patients with gastrointestinal bleeding.
    • 6 out of 7 patients with active bleeding from other sites achieved successful hemostasis.
    • No significant complications were reported, though potential ischemia was noted.

    Implications:

    • Embolization is a valuable therapeutic option for refractory or site-inappropriate bleeding.
    • It can serve as definitive treatment or a temporizing measure before surgery.
    • Consider therapeutic embolization when active extravasation is evident on imaging.
