Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Context:

  • Primary gastric extranodal marginal zone lymphoma of the marginal zone B-cell lymphoma (MALT-lymphoma) is a rare malignancy.
  • Understanding its clinical course and treatment response is crucial for patient outcomes.

Purpose:

  • To discuss the peculiar features of the clinical course and treatment of primary gastric MALT-lymphoma.
  • To evaluate treatment efficacy and patient survival in a small cohort.

Summary:

  • Seven patients with primary gastric MALT-lymphoma were analyzed.
  • Diagnosis involved morphological examination of resected material; most had low-grade tumors, one showed blast-transformation.
  • Stage IEB disease was found in 4 cases, IIEB in 3.
  • Combined surgical and chemoradiation treatment resulted in a mean remission duration of 35.1 months (range 3.5-80) and mean survival of 43.1 months (range 5-84).

Related Experiment Videos

  • One patient experienced relapse 3.5 months post-operation.
  • Impact:

    • Highlights the effectiveness of combined surgical and chemoradiation therapy for gastric MALT-lymphoma.
    • Provides valuable data on remission duration and survival rates in a small patient group.
    • Informs clinical decision-making for managing this specific type of lymphoma.
