Summary

This study shows implicit memory aids problem-solving, with priming effects strongest for difficult tasks and diminishing over time. This facilitation is independent of distractor tasks, suggesting central cognitive processing.

Area of Science:

  • Cognitive Psychology
  • Neuroscience

Background:

  • Investigating the role of implicit memory in cognitive functions like problem-solving.
  • Examining priming effects in individuals with severe amnesia to understand memory's contribution to reasoning.

Observation:

  • A severely amnesic patient performed an arithmetic series completion task.
  • The study manipulated trial difficulty, lag intervals, and distractor tasks to assess priming effects on numerical reasoning.

Findings:

  • Priming effects were maximal for difficult trials and decreased with longer lags.
  • Facilitation was not influenced by the type of distractor task employed.
  • Recognition tasks confirmed that the observed effects were not due to explicit memory recall.

Implications:

  • The findings suggest that implicit memory plays a role in central problem-solving stages, potentially in generating abstract algorithmic formulas.
  • This research contributes to understanding memory's influence on complex cognitive processes, even in amnesic patients.
