Interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) directly activates cyclooxygenase-2 (Cox-2) gene expression in macrophages. Interferon regulatory factors (IRFs) 1 and 2 play critical roles in regulating Cox-2 induction and prostaglandin E2 release.
