Area of Science:

  • Medical Imaging
  • Biophysics
  • Radiofrequency Engineering

Background:

  • Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging requires specialized radiofrequency (RF) coils for optimal signal detection.
  • Breast imaging presents unique challenges due to anatomical variations and the need for high resolution.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To design and construct an RF coil system specifically for enhanced MR breast imaging.
  • To evaluate the performance of this coil system in terms of image resolution and signal-to-noise ratio.

Main Methods:

  • A two-ring, tuned Helmholtz coil with its axis perpendicular to the chest was designed.
  • The coil was coupled internally and to the MRI system via mutual induction.
  • Two symmetrical RF shields were incorporated to minimize signal losses and improve performance.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • The coil system successfully imaged breasts of diverse sizes in eight healthy volunteers.
  • Achieved an in-plane resolution of 0.27 x 0.27 mm and slice thickness < 2 mm.
  • Demonstrated effective performance at both 1.5 Tesla (T) and 3 T field strengths.

Conclusions:

  • The developed RF coil system with RF shields significantly improves MR breast imaging quality.
  • RF shields are advocated for general use with surface coils to enhance signal-to-noise ratio.
  • This technology offers improved diagnostic capabilities for breast conditions.
