- Serum CRP was measured using an automatic Behring Nephelometer.
- The study included 28 beta-thal/HbE postsplenec, 22 beta-thal/HbE, 12 postsplenec, 23 RT, 21 MPD, and 26 healthy adult volunteers.
Main Results:
- CRP levels were significantly higher in beta-thal/HbE postsplenec patients compared to beta-thal/HbE (4.1 vs. 1.6 mg/L) and normal volunteers (4.1 vs. 0.45 mg/L).
- CRP levels in beta-thal/HbE postsplenec patients were higher than in the postsplenec group (4.1 vs. 0.19 mg/L), but significantly lower than in RT patients (4.1 vs. 55.4 mg/L).
- No statistically significant difference in CRP was found between beta-thal/HbE postsplenec patients and MPD patients (4.1 vs. 17.1 mg/L). A trend towards increased CRP with higher platelet counts was noted in beta-thal/HbE postsplenec patients.
Conclusions:
- Postsplenectomy in beta-thalassemia patients is associated with elevated serum CRP levels.
- Platelet count and/or thrombopoiesis-regulating factors may influence high CRP levels in these patients, beyond just the inflammatory process.
