Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Neurology

Background:

  • Mixed affective states in bipolar disorder present treatment challenges.
  • Limited data exists on electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for mixed bipolar states.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of ECT in medication-resistant patients with mixed affective states.
  • To describe clinical and response characteristics of patients treated with ECT.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of medication-resistant patients meeting Research Diagnostic Criteria (RDC) for both mania and major depression.
  • Seven patients received ECT after failing pharmacotherapy; one patient declined ECT.

Main Results:

  • All seven patients who received ECT achieved remission from their mixed bipolar symptoms.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The patient who did not receive ECT did not improve and required long-term care.
  • Conclusions:

    • Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a viable and effective treatment for medication-refractory mixed bipolar disorder.
    • ECT offers a significant therapeutic option for patients with severe, treatment-resistant mixed manic-depressive states.
