Summary

Maprotiline therapy can cause visual perseveration and palinopsia in patients. This visual disturbance is dose-dependent and resolves upon reducing or stopping the medication.

Background:

  • Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) are widely used for treating depression.
  • Visual side effects associated with TCAs are uncommon but can be debilitating.

Observation:

  • A case report details a 56-year-old male patient experiencing visual disturbances during maprotiline treatment.
  • The patient presented with symptoms of visual perseveration, including palinopsia.

Findings:

  • The visual perseveration was directly related to the maprotiline dosage.
  • Symptoms improved with a reduction in maprotiline dosage and resolved completely upon cessation of the drug.

Implications:

  • Maprotiline may induce visual perseveration and palinopsia in susceptible individuals.
