Summary

Patients with stable heart failure and prior myocardial infarction (MI) show no significant memory impairment. Cognitive function is unlikely to hinder treatment compliance, though anxiety and depression are common.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the prevalence of memory dysfunction in patients with stable, moderate cardiac failure.

  • Twenty patients with prior myocardial infarction (MI) and New York Heart Association class III/IV heart failure were assessed.
  • A control group of 20 patients with prior MI but no heart failure was included.
  • Memory function was evaluated using the Rivermead Behavioural Memory Test and digit span test, controlling for affective state and premorbid intellectual function.
