    Summary

    Tantalum-178, a short-lived radioisotope, shows promise for cardiac first transit studies. Its rapid clearance allows for multiple studies with lower radiation doses than technetium-99m.

    Background:

    • Tantalum-178 (9.3-minute half-life) is a generator product of tungsten-178.
    • It is being investigated as a potential radiotracer for cardiac imaging.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate tantalum-178 for first transit cardiac studies in animal models.
    • To assess its utility in analyzing intracardiac shunting and left ventricular function.

    Main Methods:

    • Intravenous injection of 20 mCi (740 MBq) tantalum-178 in monkeys and dogs.
    • Imaging performed using single crystal and multicrystal cameras.
    • Pulmonary dilution curves and high temporal resolution studies were utilized.
