Summary

Postoperative ptosis after cataract surgery is rare. This study found no significant difference in ptosis incidence between peribulbar and retrobulbar anesthesia techniques.

Context:

  • Cataract extraction is a common surgical procedure.
  • Postoperative ptosis is a potential complication affecting visual function and patient satisfaction.

Purpose:

  • To determine the incidence of postoperative ptosis following cataract extraction.
  • To investigate the influence of local anesthesia type on ptosis occurrence.

Summary:

  • 72 patients undergoing phacoemulsification were divided into two groups: peribulbar anesthesia (n=36) and retrobulbar anesthesia with lid block (n=36).
  • Ptosis was evaluated by measuring the upper eyelid margin to corneal reflex distance before and 3 days post-operation.
  • A single patient (1.4%) experienced 2 mm of ptosis, with no statistically significant difference between the anesthesia groups.

Impact:

  • The study suggests that the choice of local anesthesia technique (peribulbar vs. retrobulbar) may not significantly impact the incidence of postoperative ptosis.
  • The low overall incidence of ptosis might be attributed to the absence of bridle sutures during the procedures.
