Summary

Meniscal sutures can fail under repetitive loading, with vertical sutures showing better resistance than horizontal ones. Tissue failure, not suture material, dictates outcomes in meniscal repair.

Background:

Meniscal repair sutures are standard for treatable tears.
High failure rates necessitate further in vitro investigation.
Extended indications and accelerated protocols increase failure risk.

Purpose of the Study:

Compare vertical and horizontal mattress sutures.
Evaluate absorbable (PDS 2-0) and non-absorbable (Ethibond 2-0) materials.
Assess performance under standard and cyclic loading.

Main Methods:

Testing on medial porcine menisci.
Group A: Static testing to failure (50 mm/min).
Group B: Cyclic loading (100 cycles, 5-20N and 5-40N) followed by failure testing.

Vertical sutures had 100% suture failure; horizontal had 50% suture failure (P <.0001).

Vertical sutures demonstrate superior resistance due to better tissue integration.
