Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Pharmacology
  • Trichology

Background:

  • Alopecia, or hair loss, presents in two primary forms: anagen effluvium and telogen effluvium.
  • Medication-induced alopecia is a recognized but complex side effect of various drugs.

Observation:

  • A 51-year-old woman experienced significant hair shedding during treatment with paroxetine (Seroxat).
  • The hair loss was characterized as massive, indicating a severe reaction.

Findings:

  • The patient's alopecia resolved completely after the discontinuation of paroxetine.
  • This case supports a link between paroxetine use and drug-associated alopecia.

Implications:

  • Further research is needed to understand the pathological mechanisms of drug-induced alopecia.
  • Clinicians should consider medication review in patients presenting with sudden, severe hair loss.
