Area of Science:

  • Applied Behavior Analysis
  • Psychology
  • Clinical Assessment

Background:

  • Functional analysis (FA) is crucial for understanding and treating behavior disorders.
  • Feasibility of conducting FA in real-world settings is a concern.
  • Skill acquisition in FA implementation needs evaluation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess skill acquisition in functional analysis (FA) implementation.
  • To evaluate an instructional program for developing basic FA competencies.
  • To determine if limited prior training is sufficient for accurate FA.

Main Methods:

  • Eleven undergraduate students participated in scripted simulations.
  • Participants acted as therapists conducting FA, with graduate students as clients.

Related Experiment Videos

  • A multiple baseline design assessed training effects (materials, video, quiz, feedback).
  • Main Results:

    • Participants demonstrated high accuracy in FA implementation during baseline.
    • All participants achieved 95% accuracy after approximately 2 hours of training.
    • Training significantly improved participants' ability to conduct functional analyses.

    Conclusions:

    • Basic functional analysis (FA) skills are rapidly acquired through targeted instruction.
    • An intensive 2-hour training program is effective for developing FA competencies.
    • Individuals with minimal clinical experience can quickly learn to implement FA.
