The Need for and Difficulties With Establishing Guidelines for Prostate Cancer Treatment
1Section of Urology, University of Kansas School of Medicine, Kansas City, Kansas 66160, USA.
Abstract:
The best method for treating prostate malignancy is unknown. Significant geographical variations exist in the treatment recommendations for prostate cancer. Practice variation often indicates uncertainty regarding outcomes of intervention and signals the need for practice guidelines. Prostate cancer needs these guidelines, and efforts are currently underway to produce a practice policy document. The mechanisms of writing and implementing guideline documents are still evolving and are currently untested. Although significant benefits may be attributed to well-written and balanced practice policies, inappropriately restrictive guidelines are potentially harmful. The degree of flexibility within guideline policies needs careful consideration.
