Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Behavioral Science
  • Addiction Medicine

Background:

  • Smokeless tobacco (ST) use and associated health risks are increasing.
  • Effective, low-cost self-help cessation methods are needed.
  • Self-help interventions can overcome geographical barriers to treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of two self-help interventions for smokeless tobacco cessation.
  • To compare a technology-based intervention (LifeSign) with a traditional self-help approach (manual/video).

Main Methods:

  • 198 smokeless tobacco users were randomized into two groups.
  • Group 1 received the LifeSign device; Group 2 received the Enough Snuff manual and video.
  • Both groups received telephone support and were assessed at two and six months for sustained abstinence.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Sustained abstinence rates at six months were 24.5% for the manual/video group.
  • Sustained abstinence rates at six months were 18.4% for the LifeSign group.
  • The manual/video intervention demonstrated higher efficacy in this study.

Conclusions:

  • Self-help interventions can be effective for smokeless tobacco cessation.
  • The manual/video self-help method appears more effective than the LifeSign device for ST cessation.
  • Further research into accessible, low-cost cessation tools is warranted.
