Summary

Ocular hypertension (OHT) eyes have significantly smaller optic disc areas compared to primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and normal eyes. This finding aids in understanding glaucoma progression and diagnosis.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Glaucoma Research

Background:

  • Ocular hypertension (OHT) is a precursor to primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).
  • Optic disc size is a potential indicator in glaucoma diagnosis and progression.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare optic disc size in eyes with OHT versus POAG and normal eyes.
  • To investigate the diagnostic utility of optic disc morphometry in OHT.

Main Methods:

  • Optic disc photographs from 28 OHT, 42 POAG, and 30 normal subjects were analyzed.
  • Disc area was calculated using magnification-corrected morphometry (Littmann correction).

Main Results:

  • The mean optic disc area in OHT was 9.47 +/- 1.09 mm2.
  • POAG (12.27 +/- 2.87 mm2) and normal (12.11 +/- 2.83 mm2) eyes had significantly larger optic disc areas than OHT eyes (p < 0.0001).

Related Experiment Videos

Conclusions:

  • Optic disc area in OHT is significantly smaller than in POAG and normal eyes.
  • Magnification-corrected morphometry can differentiate OHT based on optic disc size.
