Background:

  • Head injuries can cause blindness, impacting patient prognosis.
  • Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) are used to assess visual pathway function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the prognosis of vision recovery in patients with blindness post-head injury.
  • To determine the predictive value of visual evoked potential (VEP) testing.

Main Methods:

  • 100 patients with blindness from head injury underwent visual status assessment, CT/MRI scans, and serial VEPs.
  • Some patients received steroids or surgical decompression.

Main Results:

  • 23 patients showed visual improvement; none returned to normal.

  • Initial VEPs were absent in 29 patients and abnormal in 71.
  • Repeatedly normal VEPs correlated with visual improvement; persistently absent VEPs did not.
  • Conclusions:

    • VEP recovery (from absent to abnormal, or abnormal to normal) indicates a better visual prognosis.
    • Visual improvement occurred in 23 patients but did not reach normal levels.
    • Injury characteristics, CT findings, and surgery timing did not affect outcomes.
