Streptococcal toxic shock in a horse.

Summary

This study reports the first case of equine streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS) in a 14-year-old horse. The horse presented with tachycardia and lethargy, later developing renal and hepatic failure, consistent with STSS.

Background:

Streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS) is a severe, rapidly progressive illness.
STSS has been documented in humans and dogs, but not previously reported in horses.
