Background:

Brucellosis, a zoonotic infection caused by Brucella bacteria, is rarely encountered during pregnancy.
The primary transmission route in endemic regions is through consumption of unpasteurized dairy products.
Erythritol, a growth factor for Brucella in animal placentas, is absent in human placentas, potentially explaining differential impacts.

Observation:

This study reports on 7 cases of brucellosis in pregnant women between 1977-1988, with an incidence of 0.007%.
Complications observed included preterm premature rupture of membranes, preterm delivery, clinical chorioamnionitis, intra-uterine growth retardation, and postpartum endometritis.
While Brucella is known to cause abortions in animals, its effects on human pregnancy outcomes remain debated, with limited evidence of transplacental passage.

Findings:

Brucellosis in pregnant women can lead to significant obstetric complications, including premature delivery and infection of the amniotic membranes.
Postpartum complications such as endometritis were also observed in some cases.
The study underscores the variability in pregnancy outcomes associated with brucellosis.

Implications:

Increased surveillance for brucellosis in pregnant women in areas with rising incidence is warranted.
Understanding the specific risks and management of brucellosis during pregnancy is crucial for improving maternal and fetal outcomes.
Further research is needed to clarify the mechanisms of Brucella infection in human pregnancy and its long-term effects.
