Summary
Diabetes mellitus is more common in patients with idiopathic hyperaldosteronism than aldosterone-producing adenoma. A family history of diabetes significantly increases diabetes risk in primary aldosteronism patients.
Area of Science:
- Endocrinology
- Metabolic Diseases
Background:
- Limited information exists on diabetes mellitus (DM) in primary aldosteronism (PA).
- PA is a condition characterized by excessive aldosterone production.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the prevalence of DM in the two main subtypes of PA.
- To investigate the association between DM and clinical variables in PA patients.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective analysis of 50 PA patients (aldosterone-producing adenoma vs. idiopathic hyperaldosteronism).
- Fasting plasma glucose measured and evaluated using American Diabetes Association criteria (1997).
- Chi-square test used for statistical analysis of associations.
Main Results:
- Diabetes mellitus was diagnosed in 12% of PA patients.
- DM was significantly more prevalent in idiopathic hyperaldosteronism (47%) compared to aldosterone-producing adenoma (13%).
- A positive family history of diabetes was associated with a higher incidence of DM in PA patients.
Conclusions:
- The occurrence of DM in PA is significantly linked to the idiopathic subtype.
- A family history of diabetes is a key factor associated with DM in PA.
