Summary

Small appendiceal carcinoids (tumors) under 2 cm have a favorable prognosis with a 100% 5-year survival rate after appendectomy. Larger tumors (over 2 cm) have a significantly worse prognosis, with survival rates dropping to 21-42%.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Context:

  • A study reviewed nine classic carcinoid tumors smaller than 2 cm diagnosed between 1994-1999.
  • These tumors were located outside the appendiceal base.

Purpose:

  • To assess the prognosis of small appendiceal carcinoid tumors.
  • To compare outcomes with larger tumors based on literature.

Summary:

  • Appendectomy with mesenteriolum removal was performed for all nine small carcinoid cases.
  • Small appendiceal carcinoids (<2 cm) show a 100% 5-year survival rate.
  • Larger carcinoid tumors (>2 cm) have a poorer prognosis, with recurrence and metastasis, leading to 21-42% 5-year survival.

Impact:

  • Highlights the importance of tumor size in appendiceal carcinoid prognosis.
  • Informs treatment strategies and patient counseling for appendiceal carcinoids.
