Summary

Medical interns show improved practical skills after hospital training, but initial skill levels and supervision quality vary significantly. Further standardization of practical procedure training is recommended for better outcomes.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Clinical Skills Training
  • Internship Programs

Background:

  • Previous studies indicate variable and insufficient practical skills among medical interns post-hospitalization.
  • Interns' skill acquisition in common practical procedures requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the development of interns' practical skills.
  • To analyze skill development in relation to gender, medical school, hospital, and supervision.

Main Methods:

  • A survey of 599 Norwegian interns between 1996 and 1999.
  • Interns self-reported skill levels in 88 procedures before and after internship.
  • A response rate of 79% (472 interns) was achieved.

Main Results:

  • Males reported significantly higher skill levels than females.
  • No significant differences in skills were observed between interns from different universities post-internship.
  • All interns showed overall improvement, with those starting with lower skills demonstrating the greatest gains.

Conclusions:

  • Variable skill levels and development suggest unstructured and inadequate practical procedure teaching.
  • A need exists for consensus on required skills and proficiency levels.
  • Enhancing the quality of supervision during internship is crucial.
