Verrucous hemangiomas, now termed verrucous malformations, are vascular lesions requiring surgical excision. Excision offers favorable results over ablative therapies for these keratotic growths.

Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Dermatology
  • Vascular Malformations

Background:

  • Verrucous hemangiomas are a rare subset of vascular malformations.
  • These lesions present with epidermal hyperplasia and subcutaneous extension.
  • Limited literature exists on their management in plastic surgery.

Observation:

  • Six patients with verrucous malformations were evaluated and treated.
  • Three patients experienced lesion enlargement and discomfort after failed cryotherapy or laser removal by non-surgeons.
  • Staged excision was necessary for three patients due to lesion size and location.

Findings:

  • Surgical excision is recommended over ablative therapies like laser or cryosurgery.
  • Excision demonstrated favorable outcomes in the reviewed cases.

Related Experiment Videos

  • A single recurrence was successfully managed with reexcision.
  • Implications:

    • The study advocates for renaming these lesions "verrucous malformations."
    • A treatment algorithm favoring excision is proposed.
    • Effective management of verrucous malformations can be achieved through surgical excision.
