Summary

A new technique allows sternal bone biopsy in standing horses, yielding intact cancellous bone specimens suitable for histological evaluation. This minimally invasive procedure is well-tolerated and effective for obtaining diagnostic samples.

  • Five adult horses underwent biopsy using an electric drill after sedation and local anesthesia.
  • The sternal biopsy site was identified ultrasonographically.
  • Specimens were processed for histological and histomorphometric evaluation.

  • The 4th or 5th sternebra was the optimal biopsy site.
  • The procedure was easily performed, well-tolerated, and yielded adequate samples.
