Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Obstetrics
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Postpartum stroke is an uncommon yet serious complication following childbirth.
  • Understanding its clinical presentation, causes, and outcomes is crucial for maternal healthcare.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize the clinical presentation, etiology, and outcomes of postpartum stroke.
  • To investigate potential associations with delivery mode, anesthesia, and hypertensive disorders.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 20 women diagnosed with postpartum stroke over 20 years.
  • Analysis of clinical data, neuroimaging, and maternal outcomes.

Main Results:

  • Cerebral infarction and intracerebral hemorrhage were primary causes.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Headache, seizures, and hemiparesis were common symptoms but not predictive of outcome.
  • Intracerebral hemorrhage was associated with the poorest maternal outcomes.
  • Cesarean delivery was more frequent in postpartum stroke patients compared to the general obstetric population.
  • No association was found between conduction anesthesia and postpartum stroke.
  • Conclusions:

    • Postpartum stroke is a multifactorial, nonpreventable complication.
    • Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and cesarean delivery showed an association with postpartum stroke.
    • Conduction anesthesia is not etiologically linked to postpartum stroke.
