Summary

Highly myopic eyes show optic disc area increases with axial length. Other optic nerve head features like cup/disc ratio were similar in severe and mild myopia groups.

Impact of Treatment Modality on Quality of Life Among Uterine Cancer Survivors.

Clinical oncology (Royal College of Radiologists (Great Britain))·2022

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Optometry
  • Retinal Imaging

Background:

  • High myopia is a significant risk factor for optic neuropathy.
  • Understanding optic nerve head (ONH) changes is crucial for managing myopic complications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate optic nerve head (ONH) morphology in highly myopic individuals.
  • To compare ONH parameters between severe and mild myopia using confocal laser scanning ophthalmoscopy.

Main Methods:

  • Studied 114 highly myopic subjects (> -8.0 D) and 29 controls (≤ -3.0 D).
  • Utilized laser scanning and 3D image analysis for morphometric ONH values.
  • Measured cycloplegic refraction, axial length, and corneal curvature.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Optic disc area was comparable between severe and mild myopia groups.
  • Optic disc area showed a positive correlation with axial length in severe myopia.
  • Cup/disc ratio, disc depth, neuroretinal rim area, and disc tilt were not significantly different between groups.

Conclusions:

  • Optic disc area's relationship with axial length in severe myopia warrants further investigation.
  • Findings contribute to understanding myopic progression and complications.
  • Provides baseline ONH data for future studies on myopia.
