Background:

  • Elevated aqueous flare in the fellow eye is a known complication after cataract surgery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether vitrectomy surgery also induces a subclinical sympathetic reaction in the fellow eye.
  • To measure changes in aqueous flare levels in the contralateral eye post-vitrectomy.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective clinical study involving 38 patients undergoing vitrectomy.
  • Aqueous flare levels in the fellow eye were measured preoperatively and two weeks postoperatively using a laser flare-cell meter.

Main Results:

  • Fellow eyes showed significantly higher aqueous flare levels two weeks after vitrectomy (mean 15.70 photon counts/millisecond) compared to preoperative levels (mean 11.78 photon counts/millisecond).
