Area of Science:

  • Developmental Psychology
  • Linguistics
  • Neuroscience

Background:

  • Dyslexia is defined as a language-based disorder impacting phonological processing.
  • This leads to difficulties in decoding, spelling, and reading comprehension.
  • The widely accepted reading model posits decoding as essential for reading comprehension.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To discuss the relevance of current dyslexia definitions and the underlying reading model.
  • To analyze data from a longitudinal study of language-impaired preschoolers.
  • To compare this group with controls and adolescent/adult dyslexics.

Main Methods:

  • Longitudinal study design.
  • Diagnosis of language impairment in preschoolers.
  • Comparison of language-impaired children with control groups and dyslexic individuals.
  • Assessment of phonological processing, decoding, spelling, and reading comprehension.

Main Results:

  • Language-impaired preschoolers exhibit primary deficits in phonological processing.
  • These deficits lead to secondary difficulties in decoding, spelling, and reading comprehension.
  • Findings support the reading model where decoding is a prerequisite for comprehension.

Conclusions:

  • Current definitions of dyslexia align with observed language-based deficits.
  • The reading model, emphasizing decoding, is supported by longitudinal data.
  • Early identification and intervention for language impairments are crucial for reading development.
