    Summary

    Serum dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (D beta H) levels do not reliably diagnose familial dysautonomia in children. While levels may be lower in older patients, they are not a decisive indicator for diagnosis.

    Background:

    • Familial dysautonomia is a rare genetic disorder affecting the autonomic nervous system.
    • Dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (D beta H) is an enzyme involved in neurotransmitter synthesis, and its serum levels have been investigated as a potential biomarker.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the diagnostic utility of serum dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (D beta H) levels in patients with familial dysautonomia.
    • To determine if serum D beta H levels correlate with age or clinical symptoms in familial dysautonomia.

    Main Methods:

    • Serum samples were collected from children diagnosed with familial dysautonomia and age-matched control subjects.
    • Serum D beta H activity was measured in all participants.
    • Statistical analysis was performed to compare D beta H levels between groups and assess correlations.
