Background:

  • Discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) is an autoimmune skin disease in dogs.
  • Steroids are a common treatment for DLE.
  • Canine skin conditions can sometimes mimic other diseases.

Observation:

  • A 9-year-old Irish water spaniel presented with persistent nodular alopecia and erythematous skin lesions.
  • The lesions did not improve despite treatment with corticosteroids.

Findings:

  • Skin biopsy confirmed epitheliotropic lymphoma.
  • This diagnosis was made despite the initial presentation suggestive of discoid lupus.

Implications:

  • Epitheliotropic lymphoma should be considered in cases of refractory or atypical canine skin disease.
  • Accurate diagnosis through biopsy is crucial for appropriate treatment of canine skin cancers.
  • This case highlights the importance of histopathological examination in veterinary dermatology.
