Phototoxicity from systemic sodium fluorescein.

Summary

Systemic fluorescein, used in retinal angiography, can rarely cause phototoxicity. This reaction, characterized by skin redness and pain after sun exposure, occurred in two volunteers in a small study.

Background:

Fluorescein is a widely used dye for retinal angiography.
Its in vitro properties suggest potential photodynamic activity.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the occurrence of phototoxicity from systemic fluorescein at doses used for retinal angiography.
To estimate the prevalence of this adverse reaction.

Main Methods:

Fourteen volunteers were enrolled in a controlled challenge study.
Skin areas were exposed to sunlight before and after fluorescein administration, with sunscreen applied.

Main Results:

Two subjects developed phototoxic reactions (erythema, vesiculation, pain) in sun-exposed areas within one hour.

Reactions resolved over several days without tanning.

Conclusions:

Systemic fluorescein, at doses used in retinal angiography, may rarely induce phototoxicity in humans.
The low reported incidence of this reaction warrants further investigation.
