Summary

Systemic fluorescein, used in retinal angiography, can rarely cause phototoxicity. This reaction, characterized by skin redness and pain after sun exposure, occurred in two volunteers in a small study.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Dermatology
  • Photobiology

Background:

  • Fluorescein is a widely used dye for retinal angiography.
  • Its in vitro properties suggest potential photodynamic activity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the occurrence of phototoxicity from systemic fluorescein at doses used for retinal angiography.
  • To estimate the prevalence of this adverse reaction.

Main Methods:

  • Fourteen volunteers were enrolled in a controlled challenge study.
  • Skin areas were exposed to sunlight before and after fluorescein administration, with sunscreen applied.

Main Results:

  • Two subjects developed phototoxic reactions (erythema, vesiculation, pain) in sun-exposed areas within one hour.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Reactions resolved over several days without tanning.
  • Conclusions:

    • Systemic fluorescein, at doses used in retinal angiography, may rarely induce phototoxicity in humans.
    • The low reported incidence of this reaction warrants further investigation.
