Surgical removal of Meckel

Area of Science:

  • Gastrointestinal Surgery
  • Surgical Pathology
  • Abdominal Surgery

Background:

  • Meckel's diverticulum is a congenital anomaly of the small intestine.
  • Appendiceal pathology is a common surgical condition.
  • The incidental finding of Meckel's diverticulum during appendectomy is not uncommon.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of Meckel's diverticulum in patients undergoing surgery for appendiceal-like pathology.
  • To evaluate the necessity and outcomes of surgical removal of asymptomatic Meckel's diverticulum.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 1211 patients with appendiceal-like pathology from 1973 to present.
  • Surgical removal (diverticulectomy or intestinal resection) of all identified Meckel's diverticula, regardless of symptoms.

Related Experiment Videos

  • One-year follow-up to assess patient outcomes.
  • Main Results:

    • Meckel's diverticulum was rarely diagnosed preoperatively.
    • All patients who underwent diverticulectomy experienced satisfactory outcomes.
    • No complications or discomfort were reported at one-year follow-up.

    Conclusions:

    • Routine investigation for Meckel's diverticulum during appendectomy is recommended.
    • Asymptomatic Meckel's diverticulum should be surgically removed to prevent potential severe complications.
    • The risks associated with asymptomatic diverticulum removal are less significant than those of untreated complications.
