Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Acromegaly is associated with an increased incidence of colorectal neoplastic lesions.
  • Studies indicate a 3-fold higher prevalence of intestinal polyps and up to 4-fold increased risk of colorectal cancer in acromegaly patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To highlight the increased risk of colorectal neoplasms in acromegaly.
  • To emphasize the importance of early detection and recommended screening methods.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective studies utilizing colonoscopy.
  • Pancolonoscopy as the diagnostic procedure of choice for large bowel neoplasms.

Main Results:

  • Acromegaly patients exhibit multiple polyps (hyperplastic and adenomatous) throughout the large bowel, sometimes associated with carcinomas.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Pancolonoscopy demonstrates higher sensitivity and specificity than barium enema, fecal occult blood tests, and CEA levels.
  • Conclusions:

    • Pancolonoscopy is recommended for monitoring acromegaly patients for early detection of colorectal neoplastic lesions.
    • Despite potential challenges due to colonic anatomy, pancolonoscopy is crucial for managing this high-risk group.
