    Summary

    Intravenous pyelography can cause electrocardiogram (ECG) changes, particularly in older patients or those with pre-existing abnormal ECGs. Standard and infusion pyelography showed similar rates of ECG alterations.

    Background:

    • Intravenous pyelography (IVP) is a common diagnostic imaging procedure.
    • Potential cardiac side effects of IVP require investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the incidence and characteristics of electrocardiogram (ECG) changes following IVP.
    • To identify patient factors associated with ECG alterations after IVP.

    Main Methods:

    • One hundred consecutive patients undergoing IVP had ECGs recorded before, immediately after, and 5 minutes post-injection.
    • Patients were stratified based on pre-existing ECG abnormalities and age.
    • Comparison between standard and infusion pyelography techniques was performed.

    Main Results:

    • ECG changes were observed in 15% of patients, with 5% experiencing major changes.
    • Patients with pre-existing abnormal ECGs had a significantly higher incidence of changes.
    • Older patients were more likely to develop ECG alterations.
    • No significant difference in ECG changes was noted between standard and infusion IVP.

    Conclusions:

    • IVP can induce transient ECG changes.
    • Pre-existing cardiac conditions and advanced age are risk factors for IVP-related ECG changes.
    • Both standard and infusion IVP techniques appear to have comparable cardiac safety profiles regarding ECG alterations.
