Abstract:
Atrial septal aneurysm is a saccular formed dilation of the tissue, generally located at the level of the fossa ovalis, which protrudes to the right or the left atrium or both. With the use of transesophageal echocardiography it has become more easily and more frequently identified in patients. The prevalence of atrial septal aneurysm, with transesophageal echocardiography, is between 2% and 10% in adults. In the pediatric patient population, the prevalence is 0.9% to 1.7% in children and 4.9% in infants. Atrial septal aneurysm has been associated with congenital heart diseases, with acquired heart diseases, and more recently with cerebrovascular events of embolic origin, including transient ischemic attacks and acute cerebrovascular accidents.
