Abstract:
Our understanding of the effect of androgens on insulin action and glucose metabolism is incomplete. Data derive from several different models and methods, and the limitations of each must be considered. Results suggest that in humans, low-dose testosterone (replacement dosages) may increase insulin action; high-dose testosterone (supplemental or pharmacologic dosages) decreases insulin action; and dehydroepiandrosterone appears to have no effect.
