Summary

Depression is linked to lower 5-HT(1A) receptor binding potential in key brain areas. This study found significant reductions in depressed patients, especially those with bipolar disorder, suggesting impaired serotonin signaling.

  • Previous studies suggest reduced serotonin 5-HT(1A) receptor sensitivity in depression.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate regional 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT(1A)) receptor binding potential (BP) in patients with primary, recurrent, familial mood disorders.
  • To compare 5-HT(1A) receptor BP between depressed subjects and healthy controls using positron emission tomography (PET).

Main Methods:

  • Utilized PET imaging with the radioligand [carbonyl-(11)C]WAY-100635 to quantify 5-HT(1A) receptor BP.
  • Compared regional BP values in depressed patients (bipolar and unipolar) with those of healthy controls.
