Summary

Routine coagulation studies are unnecessary before percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN). Abnormal results did not predict hemorrhagic complications in patients undergoing PCN, making pre-procedure screening unnecessary.

Background:

  • Percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN) is a common urological procedure.
  • The necessity of pre-procedure coagulation studies for PCN remains debated among investigators.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the utility of pre-procedure coagulation studies in predicting hemorrhagic complications in patients undergoing percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN).

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective review of 160 patients undergoing PCN was conducted.
  • Patients with specific bleeding risks were excluded.
  • Patients were divided into two groups based on normal or abnormal prothrombin time (PT) and partial thromboplastin time (PTT).
