Summary

Urinary carcinogens can cause colon cancer years after ureterosigmoidostomy. Even after removing the urinary diversion, a patient developed colon cancer at the prior surgical site, highlighting the need for long-term patient monitoring.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Oncology
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Ureterosigmoidostomy is a surgical procedure for urinary diversion.
  • Exposure to urinary carcinogens is a known risk factor for malignant transformation in the colon.

Observation:

  • A case of colon carcinoma developing at the site of a previous ureterosigmoidostomy anastomosis is presented.
  • The carcinoma developed despite the early removal of the ureterosigmoidostomy, ceasing urine flow to the colon.

Findings:

  • Urinary carcinogens can promote late malignant transformation of the colon.
  • The latency period for cancer development can be significant, even after the cessation of exposure.

Implications:

  • Long-term surveillance is crucial for patients who have undergone ureterosigmoidostomy.
